Mexico sees development through transparency

Ángel Junquera, Founding Partner, Junquera y Forcada, talks about necessary legislation in the public sector to fight corruption and the country’s need to look beyond the U.S. for trading partners.

What major pillars support Mexico’s current economic development?

Mexico is an economic power. Mexico has had exponential growth because of its mineral sector – even more than from the oil sector and exchange market; our territory contains a lot of mineral wealth. The aeronautic sector has also grown and evolved since the creation of the Aeronautical University in Santiago de Querétaro. We have the potential to become a big player in creating engines. Additionally, Mexico’s pharmaceutical industry is growing. Mexico has made great efforts to grow its tourism sector and invite investments. Cultural treasures of the country are enormous, and the most significant of them is its people. The average Mexican is hardworking, honest, capable and dedicated. The legal system is firm, and we have been successful with its implementation. Mexico is a market of opportunity.

What major challenges does Mexico need to overcome in developing its economy?

More implemented reforms are required for structural change. The most important thing is to heighten accountability of governing authorities. Civil society needs to do their part to demand results. Corruption is prominent in Mexico and very painful for the country; the anti-corruption agenda is fundamental. We need to expose corruption and keep the rule of law in the country.

How significant is the U.S. market in developing Mexico’s economy?

When you have an economic relationship with someone and it has flown well for many years, both parties suffer when it breaks down. There needs to be a clear and precise shared goal otherwise there will be problems. I am not downgrading our U.S. neighborhoods; it is a codependency. However, we need to look at expanding our investment horizons with other markets, such as Asian countries.

Can you give us an overview of your work at Junquera y Forcada?

We are a well-trained law firm with great relations and a strong presence. We are an active participant in promoting prevention of problems, which greatly benefits our clients. We offer great services and are committed to our clients. Our training gives us the means to offer services to any type of client. We have a bilingual staff that helps international clients accomplish tasks. We have seen exponential growth for 33 years. We started with five partners and two secretaries and are currently 50 lawyers. Selecting the right people to work with is a great filter. Junquera y Forcada is a boutique firm, and we want to keep it that way. We are not thinking of growing in numbers so much as growing our skills in areas of interest. Personal development is important.

I am a member of the Mexican Bar Association College, the National Industry of Lawyers, the International Association of Lawyers and the American Society of International Law. Recently, I was the oldest in two of the collegiate bodies, which is funny because I am not so old. Having certifications and being a direct member of a guild of lawyers is crucial in being an active participant in current events and remaining updated.
